Our problem down here with a significant accumulation is that we dont have equipment that can move it once it gets piled up, thaws and refreezes. There are about 3 guys who try to punch out the 3 miles of road from the state road to my house, they all have little Kubota like tractors with blades that are only about 8 inches tall and 4 feet wide. Once they punch a groove (similar to a bobsled run, one groove with 3 ft walls) their tractors cant move it any more as they cant even drive through it then, much less move it. On the big roads the state plows can move it until it gets built up to about the same height, after that if they try to hit the 3 foot tall frozen pile it will break the plow, they have to resort to big rubber tire loaders to pick it up one bucket at a time and throw it off to the side. It hasnt snowed since last Wed and they still have areas that all the turn lanes and exit ramps arent completely clear yet. Without a snow blower most of the walks in the city areas are still buried with a 3-4 foot thick pile from the road, so people have to walk in streets. I have seen the pics of those monster 4 foot tall V shaped plows that can move this crap, but we dont have any of those. A couple schools are still closed for fear of the roofs collapsing as the buildings down here arent designed to hold that much snow on a flat roof. The local WalMart had to close for 4 days until they could shovel off the roof. My roof still has a 15 inch layer on it, I expect it to slide off this weekend, and rip all my gutters completely off and crush the crap out of the bushes. From my house to Scotts about 15 trees fell accross the road, and were cut out of the groove, but much more cleaning up will need to be done once we can try to establish a 2 lane road again, in the meantime we have just been waiting for the couple 40 degree days of late to melt enough to do anything with it. Its supposed to be around 40 for the next week with lows in the 20s, which means the bobsled run I call a road will be an ice slick on the bottom until 9am, then turn to thick slush before it freezes again the next night, makes for an interesting trip at times. If we could expect this crap every year, we would all have snowmobiles and snow blowers and stuff made for this crap, but since we usually consider 10inches of snow a big storm 9 years out of 10, nobody has the goods for dealing with duel 20+ inch snowfalls. And there were very few above freezing days between the first and the second, we had about 3 and a half weeks from xmas into Jan were the temp never got above 30 degrees, which again only happens about 2 winters out of 7 around here. I remember twice in the past 4 years playing golf in a short sleeve shirt around new years day. Oh the good ole days of global warming
Hell I bet Vancouver didnt get 60+ inches of snow in the last 6 weeks, they shoulda had the winter olympics in Spotsylvania
